Men's soccer triumphs over New York, Brandeis on the road
The Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team hit the road to New York this past weekend to play the New York University Violets and the Brandeis University Judges in a University Athletic Association (UAA) double-header. The men defeated New York 2–0 on Friday and went on to beat Brandeis 2–1 on Sunday.
Volleyball defeats Westminster College 3-2
The Carnegie Mellon women's volleyball team ended its successful home schedule with a comeback victory Saturday as the team beat the Westminster College Titans 3–2. After losing the first two games, the Tartans won the next three games to grab the win, improving their record to 19–14.
Before the game, seniors Chisom Amaechi, Liz DeVleming, and Julianne Bierwirth were honored as a part of the Senior Day celebration. They were given flowers from the team in what Amaechi called a “sad and emotional” final home game.
Swimming kicks off season with victory over Grove City
The Carnegie Mellon men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams started their season off in an exciting fashion with 174–125 and 178–121 wins over Grove City College on Saturday.
Football falls 16-8 to host Washington University
Carnegie Mellon football opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play Saturday, losing 16–8 to the Bears of Washington University in St. Louis at Francis Field. This game marks the 26th time the Tartans contested a game against the Bears, who they lead 14–11. Both teams came in with a season record of 4–3, but the Tartans’ loss caused their record to drop to 4–4, while the Bears moved up to 5–3.
Men's cross country takes second at UAA championship; women's team finishes sixth
Last Saturday, the Carnegie Mellon cross country team traveled to Emory University in Atlanta to compete in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship. Although the men’s team had a strong race collectively, the Tartans fell short of New York University to take a disappointing second place overall with 52 points.
Women's soccer defeats New York 1–0, ties Brandeis 0-0
An own goal scored by a New York University defender put Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer up by one in Friday’s match against the Violets, a lead that the team maintained until the end of regulation. The victory prepared the team for the highly anticipated Brandeis University match-up Sunday that resulted in a double overtime 0–0 tie. After a doubleheader weekend against UAA competition, the win and tie improve the team’s record to 2–3–1 in the UAA and 8–5–3 overall.
ATHLETE PROFILE: Ricky Griffin
Junior Ricky Griffin has accrued numerous athletic and academic honors during his career at Carnegie Mellon, including a recent honor by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), along with several of his teammates.
The men’s soccer team has seen much success so far this season, and with the end of the year fast approaching, Griffin took some time to share his insights on the soccer season and his life at Carnegie Mellon.
Crew races at the Head of Occoquan
The Carnegie Mellon crew team traveled to Fairfax, Va. to race at the Head of the Occoquan Saturday. The Tartans raced five varsity and seven novice boats. The race course at Occoquan Reservoir stretches 5000 meters and has four major turns that make navigation and racing difficult.
