    Local television and radio personalities will host a night of performances by regional jazz legends. Pianist Howie Alexander and saxophonist Don Aliquo Sr. are among the performing musicians. Proceeds benefit the Black Empowerment Project (B-PEP).

  • Gestures exhibit experiments with space

    The Mexican War Streets district of Pittsburgh’s North Side is the unlikely host of many small artistic treasures. Along Sampsonia Way, the fenced-in backyards and cratered streets stand alongside historic row houses painted with colorful murals. Among these hidden treasures is the Mattress Factory, a museum that specializes in installation art.

    Carnegie Mellon’s Black Graduate Student Organization commemorates Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American youth, who was killed by a Sanford, Fla., neighborhood watch captain last month in what many consider to be an incident based on racial profiling.

  • PSO features world-renowned pianist

    Featuring a world-class guest soloist, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO)’s program added another success to the list of excellent performances in its 2011–12 season last Friday night. With Juilliard-educated and world-renowned pianist Emanuel Ax featured in the program, the orchestra once again showed its ability to bring in high-profile soloists while demonstrating its own musical prowess.
