Golf takes ninth place
The Carnegie Mellon golf team wrapped up the two-day annual Guy W. Kuhn Invitational hosted by Allegheny College at the Country Club of Meadville Sept. 22, taking ninth place in the field of 19 teams.
The Tartan shot team scores of 302 and 303 Sunday and Monday, respectively.
Senior Alex Timmons, who garnered a University Athletic Association (UAA) Golf Athlete of the Week honor following his performance at the Lamkin Fall Intercollegiate from the previous week, led the Tartans by carding 73 Sunday and 69 Monday for two under par to place second overall in the individuals ranking.
“I didn’t play very well on Sunday but kept my head in the game to shoot a decent score,” Timmons said.
“On Monday, I shot better, but unfortunately, it wasn’t good enough to help the team place higher. While I’m a bit disappointed with the final team standing, the first-years showed a lot of potential.”
Junior Christopher Lee shot 79 on opening day and improved his showing by six strokes to score 73 for the final day.
Three first-years represented Carnegie Mellon at the invitational: Michael Cheng shot 76 and 78, Andrew Cohen shot 84 and 83, and Terrence Einhorn shot a promising 74 Sunday but was disqualified after signing an incorrect card Monday.
“It wasn’t our best showing,” head coach Rich Erdelyi said, “but we’re a very good golf team and people are starting to recognize that we’re a good team.”
Carnegie Mellon will take a week off before the golf team competes on Monday, Oct. 6 at the Westminster Invitational at the New Castle Country Club in New Castle, Pa.
