Club rowing competes in 20th anniversary of Car-Du-Pitt scrimmage
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Carnegie Mellon University Rowing Club participated in its local team racing scrimmage against the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University, although the Duquesne women's team did not compete. The race, aptly named Car-Du-Pitt, was followed by an alumni celebration and barbecue.
"It was wonderful to see the whole team together, bonding with the alums and family members," said men's team captain Chris Herlich, a junior, commenting on the success of the event. "This race is a great Pittsburgh rowing tradition, and it seems to grow each and every year."
While formal results were not recorded, the University Rowing Club performed well, and finished with honorable results in all of the racing heats, including the Men's Lightweight Varsity 4+, Women's Lightweight Varsity 8+, Women's Novice 8+, Men's Novice 8+, Men's Novice 4+, and pair racing.
"Both Duquesne and Pitt have very competitive teams, so we were very pleased to be able to hold rank with them," said junior J. Nicholas Smarto, a Tartan rower. "It gives us a sense of pride to be able to show our accomplishments to the alumni when they visit, and they all seemed very proud of the progress of the team."
The much-celebrated alumni event reminded present and past scholar-athletes about the traditions and success of the club. The team will travel to Charleston, W.Va. next weekend to compete in the Governor's Cup Regatta.
"We are excited for the remaining three races of the season, and expect to perform very well in those regattas," Smarto said.
