Golf placed second in tournament over break

While most students relaxed at home or caught some rays in the tropics, the Carnegie Mellon University golf team spent its spring break working on each player’s swing in Florida. Webber International University, hosted Carnegie Mellon, along with Warner Southern University and Doan University in the Grenelefe Webber International Tournament at Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort in Haines City, Fla. on March 14 and 15.
This event marked the first tournament of the 2008 spring season for the Tartans, and they came away with a second-place finish and a team score of 636. While second is a solid position, Carnegie Mellon was not content and the team hopes to improve throughout the season.
“After the first day we were in the lead, and we really wanted to come out [on] day two and win it,” said sophomore Brett Cannaday about the second-place finish.
The Tartans were tied for first with Webber International with a score of 318 the first day. Senior Howard Smith and juniors Alex Timmons and Josh Chen each shot a 79 on the first day. First-year Brent Driscoll shot an 81 and sophomore Cannaday shot an 85.
On day two, Howard and Chen braved the windy elements with strong performances, shooting a 77 and 76, respectively; both were named to the All-Tournament team. Timmons, Cannaday, and Driscoll shot 81, 84, and 88, respectively. After missing the fall season due to a shoulder injury, Cannaday was happy to be back on the fairway and is excited about the rest of the spring season.
“We will hopefully go to nationals this year. There is a really strong mix of players on this team so I think it is definitely within our reach,” Cannaday said.
Three singles players competed in the tournament: seniors Denver Faulk and Blake Darby and sophomore Nick Burkholder. Faulk shot an 81 and 83, Darby finished with a 93 and 87, and Burkholder came away with an 86 and 87.
The team next competes at Kenyon College Saturday.
