Men's cross country takes second at UAA championship; women's team finishes sixth

Last Saturday, the Carnegie Mellon cross country team traveled to Emory University in Atlanta to compete in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship. Although the men’s team had a strong race collectively, the Tartans fell short of New York University to take a disappointing second place overall with 52 points.

The women’s team finished sixth out of eight teams with 150 points. The Case Western Reserve University women’s team took first with 48 points.
On the men’s side, senior Brian Harvey led the team by taking second overall with a time of 25:36.46. Behind Harvey, senior Breck Fresen and junior Dario Donatelli finished eighth and ninth overall with times of 26:01.58 and 26:01.99, respectively.

Sophomore Dan Addis finished 16th overall with a time of 26:31.19. Senior Ryan Anderson (26:33.82) and sophomore J.P. Allera (26:44.54) finished 17th and 25th overall.

“I, and the team as a whole, were disappointed with the way things turned out,” Anderson said. “While some people had some positives in their race, for the most part we didn’t do what we set out to do.”

Senior Mike Condon and sophomore Josh Eickmeier took 31st and 59th overall with times of 26:55.92 and 27:42. Despite a somewhat disappointing second finish, the men’s team had a good experience in Georgia and visited the Georgia Aquarium afterward.

For the women’s team, first-year Liz Stern (21:55.55) had a terrific race to finish third overall for her first UAA Championship game. Sophomore Courtney Baker and senior Carolyn Clayton finished 19th and 41st overall with times of 22:49.42 and 23:34.69.

“I was very excited about my 19th-place finish! There are several girls in our conference that are ranked nationally, so to race against them was a great experience,” Baker said. “I also set a personal record for the 6K, which is always fun.”

Junior Anna Lenhart had a solid race, finishing 47th overall with a time of 23:50.48. First-year Cassie Wallace and senior Chrissy Krutz placed 59th and 60th overall with times of 24:28.84 and 24:48.84.

“I don’t think the traveling hurt us in any large way as we went a day early; other teams had the same experience. We all had a good time as a whole,” Anderson said.
Both the men’s and women’s team will take a long break before returning to the Mideast Regional at Waynesburg University Saturday, Nov. 15.
