Title: University Lecture Series Journeys Lecture — Bill Elliott, “A Reflection of 38 Years at Carnegie Mellon”
The Basics: Bill Elliott, recently retired vice president for enrollment, will share many of the defining experiences of his life, 38 years of which were spent on Carnegie Mellon’s campus. Elliott currently lives on the Maine coast.

Title: Drue Heinz Lecture Series — David Macaulay
The Basics: David Macaulay, award-winning author and illustrator of over 20 books, will give a presentation on his most recent book, The Way We Work (Houghton Mifflin, 2008), which is about the architecture of the human body. Macaulay will host a Q&A session and book signing on campus prior to the lecture, sponsored by the professional writing program of the English department in conjunction with the Drue Heinz Lecture Series.

Title: University Lecture Series — “What Will it Take to Realize the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?”
The Basics: Lyn Beth Neylon will discuss the future of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. From 2004 to 2007, Neylon led legal rights projects for women in Benin and Rwanda. In the past, she has served as the associate director of the Washington Kurdish Institute; the legal counsel for the Committee on Health, Education, and Social Affairs for the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia; the legal counsel investigating human rights abuses by the police force in the Republic of Palau; director of Human Rights USA, a domestic human rights education initiative; and the co-founder of Human Rights Access, a local nonprofit.

Title: AB Presents — “Antonia Juhasz and the Tyranny of Oil”
The Basics: Antonia Juhasz, a leading expert on globalization and the oil industry, will discuss her new book The Tyranny of Oil: The World’s Most Powerful Industry — And What We Must Do To Stop It (William Morrow, 2008). In the book, Juhasz explains the effects of the oil industry on government officials, the lack of industry regulation worldwide, and the reasons why prices at the pumps have skyrocketed. She also proposes a solution that will limit the industry’s governmental lobbying power, environmental destruction, and the world’s growing dependence on oil.

Title: School of Design Lecture Series — “Natural Born (Visual) Storytellers”
The Basics: Nancy Duarte and Ryan Orcutt, principal and art director (respectively) of Duarte Designs, will explain the process of illustrating a story in a way that will capture its audience. Duarte Designs is a leading firm in the area of presentation development and design, and is best known for its presentation design for Al Gore’s slide show in the 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth. In addition, Duarte is the author of the recently published book slide:ology: The Art and Science of Creating Great Presentations (O’Reilly Media, 2008), copies of which will be on sale at the lecture.
