Design professor Anderon elected president

Eric Anderson, associate professor in Carnegie Mellon’s School of Design, has been elected president of the Board of Directors and Education Council of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). He will begin his term in January 2009.

Anderson is the first African-American to be elected as both president and member of the Board of Directors of the IDSA. Carnegie Mellon, however, has a history of faculty members occupying the position, and Anderson will be the third faculty member to hold the presidency.

The IDSA is a professional group of over 3300 industrial designers spread out across 28 regional chapters nationwide. The society is responsible for the publication of Innovation Magazine, the monthly newsletter Design Perspectives, and the annual Directory of Industrial Designers.

At Carnegie Mellon, Anderson teaches classes in industrial design, design drawing, and product design and development, and does research in graphic representation across all disciplines.
Anderson is also very active within the local community. He is the founder of Design Camp, a week-long summer program for African-American boys, and To Envision, Inc., a design consulting firm.

Anderson comes from a diverse education background, holding a bachelor’s degree in industrial design and a master’s degree in design education from the Ohio State University. He has consulted for a number of companies, including ACME Animation and Six Flags.

Deborah Moon named CFO of the Year

Deborah Moon, Carnegie Mellon vice president and chief financial officer, has been named CFO of the Year for the Pittsburgh region. The Business Times honored Moon as the best out of a number of other area CFOs also mentioned by the Times on Nov. 5.

The Times cited a number of Moon’s accomplishments, including her supervision of financial documents from all seven schools and colleges and their departments at Carnegie Mellon, and management of research grants totaling more than $300 million last year. Moon was also noted for her involvement in opening the Carnegie Mellon Qatar campus, the university’s first international undergraduate campus.

Moon holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was a senior manager in the KPMG Higher Education Consulting practice in McLean, Va., before coming to Carnegie Mellon in 2001. She took the post of chief financial officer in 2005. Moon is responsible for overseeing budgets, investments, treasury, financial operations and systems, economic reporting, audits, sponsored projects, and international finance.

Moon serves on the board of UPMC Health Plan, the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers, and the Mellon Pitt Corp.
