Football drops 21–14 decision to Wittenberg
The Homecoming game at Gesling Stadium proved to be a disappointment for the Carnegie Mellon football team, as it fell 21–14 to the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers. The pace of the game resembled the changing weather conditions, but unfortunately, the sun did not shine for the Tartans in the end. Despite coming from behind to take a slight edge in the fourth quarter, Carnegie Mellon was unable to maintain it and was surpassed by a final Wittenberg touchdown with 3:46 to play. The loss moves the Tartans’ record to 4–3.
Soccer defeats Case Western 1–0, Mount Union 3–0
The Carnegie Mellon women’s soccer team took on Mount Union College in Gesling Stadium Sunday, recording a solid 3–0 victory with two goals coming from junior midfielder Casey Garth. The team also hosted two University Athletic Association (UAA) rivals last weekend, splitting the games with a 1–0 loss against the 18th-ranked University of Rochester Yellowjackets last Friday and a 1–0 victory over the Case Western Reserve University Spartans last Sunday. The games improve the team’s record to a 7–5–2 overall and 1–3–0 in the UAA.
Volleyball continues success at tournament
The Carnegie Mellon volleyball team headed to Boston to compete in the second University Athletic Association (UAA) round-robin over mid-semseter break. The Tartans split results on both days, defeating the University of Chicago and New York University but falling to Emory University and host Brandeis University. The team competed in the Wid Guisler Invitational at Juniata College last weekend, coming away with two wins and a loss.
Golf wins fall ECAC championship
The Carnegie Mellon golf team finished out the fall season on top by winning the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Championship Sunday and Monday, Oct. 12–13 at Iron Masters Country Club in Roaring Springs, Pa. The team shot a two-round score of 607 (296 and 311) to beat the second-place team by 16 strokes.
Tennis finishes fall season at ITA
Last week, first-year Laura Chen took second place and junior James Muliawan took sixth place at the ITA National Small College Singles Championship, a four-day tournament held in Mobile, Ala.
Men’s soccer beats Case Western 3–2
Two weekends ago, the Carnegie Mellon men’s soccer team hosted two University Athletic Association (UAA) opponents, the University of Rochester Yellowjackets and the Case Western Reserve University Spartans. The Tartans fell short Friday night against Rochester, losing 2–0, but rebounded with a 3–2 win over Case Western Reserve.
ATHLETE PROFILE: Liz Stern
First-year Liz Stern made a place for herself as a lead runner on the Carnegie Mellon cross country team. Winning the home invitational and as the team front runner at the Oberlin College Inter-Regional Rumble, Stern looks to keep up her success as the Tartans head into the last leg of their season with conference and national championships ahead. Last week, Stern shared aspects of her collegiate and running career with The Tartan.
